Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is an ancient healing method that originated in Japan thousands of years ago. It was then rediscovered by Japanese scholar and monk, Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. Reiki is a powerful energy healing technique used to reduce stress and alleviate physical, mental and emotional issues.
The term Reiki is a combination of two words: Rei meaning universal and Ki, energy. From the day we’re born, we’re all full of Ki energy. When you feel healthy and in high spirits, the Ki energy flowing through your body is full and balanced. But then life gets in the way due to stress, emotional trauma, lack of sleep or illness. This leads to your Ki energy getting blocked or depleted and when this happens, your immune system is weakened. Reiki brings your mind, body and soul into balance, stimulating growth, health and healing. |
How does Reiki work?
During a session, a practitioner shares reiki directly to the client using their hands. Clients are normally lying down in a quiet space, in a comfortable position.
Once the client is in a relaxed position, the practitioner will allow the reiki energy to flow from their hands to the client’s body, breaking down and clearing any heavy blocks within the body. Unlike a massage, no clothing is removed as the energy passes through any materials. A session can last for any amount of time but tends to be around the 40–50-minute mark, along with a pre and post consultation. |
As reiki has become popular over the years, it's now being used within public health authorities (including the NHS), as a complimentary therapy with conventional medical treatment. Reiki can help with:

As a practitioner with Reiki 2 attunement, I can also carry out distance healing sessions. In a post-COVID area, distance reiki sessions have become even more popular. I have sessions with clients internationally and locally who find it more convenient.
The way distance treatments are carried out changes with each practitioner, and I offer sessions via phone or video appointments. I advise clients to be in a quiet place and to lay in silence and relax, while I send reiki directly to them. You can also choose to receive treatment without needing to be in a session. Receiving distance reiki is just as powerful and effective as receiving a treatment in person. It really depends on what your preference is. The main advantage of an in-person session is that you're getting the personal human interaction and energy exchange. |
